Greens Drainage Demo Day – 18^th February 2015

The BIGGA West section committee are running a Drainage demonstration day in conjunction with Souters Sports Ltd and Williamwood Golf Club on the 18^th February. 

It is a great opportunity for all members to come along and see live works taking place at Williamwood.

It is also a great opportunity to network and enjoy a learning experience on the Turf rather than in the classroom.

The meeting time will be 10am and the works will be on for approximately 2 hours. 

There will also be a Demo of the Campeys Air 2 G2 machine on the day. There will be an opportunity for Q & A whilst out on the job with myself and other members of the Souters Staff.

Congratulations to Gordon Sangster Cathkin Braes Golf Club who has retained the national championship today.

Gordon shot a 2 under par at Liphook today after the 1st round was abandoned due to the terrible weather.

Patrons Award Nomination 2014

This is a fantastic opportunity for you to recognise the hard work and dedication of a member of your staff.  This award is so much more than just  a jolly to Harrogate and I implore you to consider submitting a nomination for a team member.  Please note that the award is for clubs of all shapes and sizes!!

The Scottish Region provides you with the opportunity to nominate yourself, an employeeor a colleague for the prestigious Patrons Award 2014.  This award recognises the member’s continuing attempt to improve his / her knowledge and skills in greenkeeping by participating in education, training and networking events.  A full list of the criteria for this award is detailed below along with information relating to the prize itself.

An award ceremony will be held at Stirling Golf Club on Wednesday, 10th December 2014 with all of the Scottish Region’s Patrons invited to attend as a thanks for their continued support to our members. 

Criteria

He/she must be a current member and have continuous membership for the last two years
He/she must be actively participating in BIGGA’s CPD scheme
He/she must be actively participating in education, either through attending industry events, college attendance or other external pursuits
He/she must be actively participating in section events, i.e. seminars, meetings and golf events
He/she could be active in environmental and/or ecological projects on their respective golf course
He/she can be nominated if it is determined that they would benefit from the experience of attending BTME but are unable to do so through financial constraints at their respective club

The Award

A Certificate detailing their accomplishment
An invitation to the Patrons Award lunch in December to receive their certificate
Three night’s bed and breakfast in Harrogate during BTME
Travel expenses to Harrogate
An education budget of £250 for the Continue to Learn programme at BTME

A nomination form for a candidate is attached to this email and can also be found on BIGGA and BIGGA Scotland web-sites.  Forms must be submitted to the Section Secretary no later than 23 September.  The proposer should detail the reasons that a candidate is worthy of the award using the scheme’s criteria with the nominee signing the form in agreement to being nominated for the award and to allow the section to contact BIGGA headquarters to access their Continuing Professional Development records.

The section committee will discuss all nominations at their committee meeting in October before putting the winner forward for confirmation at the Annual General Meeting.

BIGGA Policy on Courtesy Golf

One misconception of BIGGA membership is that courtesy golf is a benefit for members.  This of course is not the case and can only be granted by a golf club with the clear agreement of the Course Manager/Head Greenkeeper.  Unfortunately there are times when this privilege is abused either by over-use or by someone implying that they are a member when they are not or have not been for some time.

In one recent incident, the date on a card had been manually altered by an individual named Greg Hadow, who was a member of the association a few years back but has NOT worked in the industry for quite some time.  I would ask you to look out for a request from Mr Hadow and ensure that no courtesy is granted at your club.  Please note that a situation of this type is not a fraud against BIGGA but a fraud against the club that have incorrectly granted courtesy and that you would be well within your rights to contact the police.

BIGGA Policy on Courtesy Golf
We have decided to publish guidelines on the use of courtesy golf to clear up any confusion among BIGGA members and golf clubs.  We are aware the majority of members do behave sensibly when seeking courtesy golf.

The Guidelines are as follows:

• Only those with FULL greenkeeper membership should seek courtesy golf
• Courtesy golf is only given at the discretion of the individual golf club and is not an automatic benefit of membership
• Members wishing to seek courtesy golf at a club should contact the club at least 24 hours in advance of wishing to pay
• On arrival at the club, members should report to the Secretary/Pro Shop and follow normal procedures for playing golf
• Members should always produce a valid membership card as proof of status to the club
• Members should make a point of thanking the club for their courtesy on completion of their round of golf
• Members should not seek courtesy golf at any one golf club more than twice per year

The BIGGA Scottish Golf Championship takes place at Renfrew Golf Club.

Thursday, 12th June 2014

Renfrew Golf Course is a tree-lined parkland course constructed in 1970 and officially opened on 29th September 1973 and was the design of Architect Commander John D. Harris in the estate of the late Lord Blythswood.  Since 1973, the 6808 yard course with a SSS of 73 from the championship tees has hosted many major tournaments: Scottish Amateur Championship in 1984 and 1994, The European Boys Team Championship in 1988, The Sunderland of Scotland Masters and running from 2000 through to 2004 the Scottish Regional Qualifier for The Open Championship.

The Challenge Cup is awarded to the player with the best gross score and is the highest prize on offer and recognises the best golfing greenkeeper in the region.  However it should be noted that ALL members can participate at the championship with a number of individual and team competitions to play for using both strokeplay and stableford formats with a total prize fund of £1,000.

• Challenge Cup – Scottish Champion (best gross)
• Ransomes Trophy – 1st class (best net)
• Pattison Trophy – 2nd class (best net)
• STRI Trophy – 3rd class (best net)

In addition the winners of the individual strokeplay competitions will also receive their entry fee to the BIGGA National Tournament to be held at Liphook Golf Club in Hampshire.

• Friendship Trophy – best Head Greenkeeper
• M & M Trophy – best Assistant/Apprentice
• SIGGA Trophy – best Veteran (aged over 55)
• The Patrons Shield – best Patron

Annual social night Friday 22nd November 2013
